Wrapping paper calculator: how much paper you need for any box

How much wrapping paper do I need? Measure your box, check your roll, and get a cutting plan before you reach for the scissors.

For rectangular boxes and cubes only. Round packages and cylinders are not supported.

Measure your box

Use the same unit for every measurement. Measure the outside of the closed box. The starting overlap is 2 in (5 cm in metric); you can change it.

Your cutting plan

JavaScript is needed for interactive calculations. The formulas and example table below remain available.

Long dashes: cut edge. Dots: fold guides. Shaded panel: box footprint.

Diagram is not a full-size cutting template. Dimensions are rounded up to 0.01; use the written measurements.

How it’s calculated

Cut length = 2 × (box width + box height) + overlap.

Cut width = box length + box height + side allowance.

The side allowance is 0.5 in or 1.25 cm total, split equally between both ends. Default overlap is 2 in or 5 cm. These are starting allowances for this tool, not a guarantee for every paper thickness.

We also swap the box length and width, keeping its height unchanged. The cut width must fit across the roll. If both layouts fit, we choose the one yielding more complete boxes; ties use less roll length per piece.

Boxes per roll = floor(roll width ÷ cut width) × floor(roll length ÷ cut length). This uses identical pieces in regular rows. It does not mix layouts or promise the absolute minimum waste.

Switching units converts your measurements and custom overlap at 1 in = 2.54 cm. The fixed side allowance uses the rounded value listed above.

Typical box examples

Illustrative sizes, not product standards. A 30 in wide roll and 2 in overlap are used below; each cut is generated by the same calculator. Measure your own box.

Example Box L × W × H (in) Cut L × W (in)
Shoebox 12 × 8 × 4 34 × 12.5 (turned)
Book 9 × 6 × 1.5 23 × 8 (turned)
Small cube 4 × 4 × 4 18 × 8.5
Large box 20 × 14 × 10 62 × 24.5 (turned)

How to wrap a box without wasting paper

  1. Measure before cutting; compare both orientations and check the paper pattern direction.
  2. Mark the calculated rectangle on the back of your paper. Save the offcut for a smaller gift.
  3. Place the closed box on the shaded panel, roll it along the fold guides, and tape the overlap. Fold in the ends and tape.
  4. Try one box before cutting a whole batch. Thick paper, padded boxes and decorative folds may need extra allowance.

Wrapping paper questions

How much wrapping paper do I need for a box?

For this tool, cut length is 2 × (box width + box height) + overlap. Cut width is box length + box height + side allowance. Enter your measurements above to check both box orientations against your roll.

What if my box does not fit the paper roll?

The calculator swaps box length and width and tries again. If neither cut width fits, use a wider roll or a smaller rectangular box. Changing the overlap does not reduce the required cut width.

How many boxes can I wrap with one roll?

Enter the roll length to count complete pieces in regular rows. The result multiplies pieces across the roll by full rows along it. It excludes mixed layouts, damaged sections and extra decorative folds.
