Product description

Mia Zapata fronted The Gits alongside Andy Kessler on guitar, Matt Dresdner on bass and Steve Moriarty on drums. Kessler's playing was furious and metronomic, Dresdner's bass fluid, punchy, rhythmic and melodic, and Moriarty's drumming explosive and martial, creating a fierce musical frame around Zapata.

The group began in mid-1986 at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, bringing together art, thrash, noise, punk and classic rock with the playful, bookish influences of a traditional liberal arts education. Over the following years, they shaped those elements into music that was tough and sensitive, brutal and kind.

Andy, Matt, Mia and Steve relocated to Seattle around mid-1989, settling in a Capitol Hill house where they and their fellow musicians spent the next few years practicing and developing their sound. After releasing three EPs in 1990 and '91, The Gits signed with C/Z Records and issued their first full-length album, Frenching the Bully.

Seattle embraced the quartet's mix of sharp-edged force and tenderness: striking guitars supported a vulnerable, poetic emotional core. That combination fitted the gentle-yet-fierce grunge spirit, and Nirvana selected the band to open a major local show in 1990.

Their momentum grew rapidly after half a decade of intense playing on beer-soaked, smoky wooden stages. The live sound joined Bolan-like swagger with Dischord tension, while Zapata sang openly about both celebration and fear. The group's taut, angry energy accompanied a singer whose style brought to mind Bessie, Patti Smith, Joplin, Poly Styrene, Sam Cooke, Iggy Pop and Ian MacKaye, sometimes within the same song.

Mia died in 1993, less than four weeks after the band accepted an offer from Atlantic Records. This new white-vinyl edition preserves the soul, shock, fury and feeling of Frenching the Bully with remastering by renowned Seattle engineer Jack Endino.
