Product description
Beam had long wanted to call an album Hen's Teeth because the phrase suggests something impossible: hens have no teeth. To him, this record felt like an unexpected gift that should not exist, yet does.
Hen's Teeth and the earlier Light Verse are related recordings. After a year without new work, both emerged from the same sessions with the same band at Waystation studio in Laurel Canyon. Beam places increasing importance on spontaneity, feels freer and enjoys making music more than ever; rather than seek right or wrong answers, he puts in his best effort and hopes for luck.
The musicians connected so quickly that songs often came together within a few takes, sometimes with two or three recorded in a day. Like fraternal twins, the albums share musical DNA and complement one another, while their differences matter as much as their similarities.
Light Verse (2024) took its title from poetry that favors wordplay, humor and nonsense. That sweet, airy, impressionistic album sometimes approaches abstraction and shakes off the darkness of the Covid era. Hen's Teeth inhabits a more earthy, dark, robust and tangible world, with songs named Roses, Robin's Egg, Dates and Dead People, and Singing Saw.
The cover shows Beam surrounded by flourishing ferns and tropical plants. Its surreal setting contrasts strongly with Light Verse's cool blue-and-white color scheme.
The musical experiments focus more on genre than on form. Van Morrison's Astral Weeks has been a frequent reference for Beam in recent years, particularly the way jazz players approach folk music and let it develop in directions folk musicians might not pursue. The resulting music echoes influences ranging from Dock Boggs and Simon & Garfunkel to Tropicália.
Collaboration makes the process feel more like a family gathering. Beam enjoys spending the day with friends and is moved by the musical and emotional openness they bring, describing the work as both unusual and deeply rewarding.
David Garza plays guitar, Sebastian Steinberg plays bass and Tyler Chester plays keyboards. Griffin Goldsmith, Beth Goodfellow and Kyle Crane contribute drums. Paul Cartwright arranged the strings and plays violin, mandolin and other instruments.
The indie-country trio I'm With Her appears on the lively lead single Robin's Egg and again on the tender, mournful Wait Up. Arden, Beam's daughter, adds harmonies and backing vocals to three tracks. Born two months before his debut The Creek Drank the Cradle (2002), she is now 23 and a musician in her own right, becoming the first of his children to feature on one of his records.
