Product description
Beam had long wanted to call an album Hen's Teeth because the phrase suggests something impossible. Since hens do not have teeth, he sees the record as an unexpected gift that seemed unlikely to exist.
Hen's Teeth and the preceding Light Verse are related records, made with the same band during the same sessions at Waystation studio in Laurel Canyon after a year-long creative drought. Beam places greater value on spontaneity at this stage of his life, feeling freer and enjoying music more than ever; instead of right or wrong answers, he emphasizes doing his best and hoping for luck. This time, his hopes were fulfilled and good fortune arrived.
The musicians connected quickly, often recording songs in only a few takes and sometimes completing two or three a day. The albums are therefore like fraternal twins, sharing musical DNA and complementing each other while differing as much as they resemble one another.
Light Verse (2024) takes its name from poetry that uses wordplay, humor and nonsense. Its sweet, airy and impressionistic character sometimes moves toward abstraction and shakes off the gloom of the Covid era. Hen's Teeth feels earthier, darker, fuller and more tactile.
Song titles include Roses, Robin's Egg, Dates and Dead People, and Singing Saw. The cover portrays Beam surrounded by flourishing ferns and tropical plants, a surreal image that contrasts with Light Verse's cool blue-and-white palette.
Beam's experiments here focus more on genre than form. He cites Van Morrison's Astral Weeks as a recent touchstone, particularly the way jazz musicians approach folk music differently from folk players. The results echo influences ranging from Dock Boggs and Simon & Garfunkel to Tropicalia.
Collaboration remains central to Beam's work. He describes the excitement of making music feel like a family gathering, interacting with friends whose musical and emotional contributions surprise him, and spending the day playing with people who offer their most expressive, vulnerable selves. For him, it is the strangest and most enjoyable job.
David Garza plays guitar, Sebastian Steinberg plays bass and Tyler Chester plays keyboards. Drum parts come from Griffin Goldsmith, Beth Goodfellow and Kyle Crane. Paul Cartwright created the string arrangements and plays violin, mandolin and other instruments.
The indie-country trio I'm With Her joins the lively lead single Robin's Egg and returns on the tender, mournful Wait Up. Beam's daughter Arden adds harmonies and backing vocals on three tracks. Born two months before his debut The Creek Drank the Cradle (2002) was released, she is 23 and a musician herself, becoming the first of his children to perform on one of his records.
