Product description

Introduced in 1981 as a high-quality alternative to tortoiseshell, Tortex developed a distinctive identity and became a benchmark for other picks. Building on the precision, consistency and color-coded gauge system of his Nylon Picks, Jim Dunlop sought a bright, snappy attack with excellent memory, durability and grip.

He selected Delrin as the base material and spent over a year developing a special treatment to realize its potential. That process gives Tortex its distinctive matte surface for improved grip and an aggressive attack. He also expanded his earlier color-coded gauge system into the vivid, lasting palette that became an industry standard. Tortex still follows the original formula and is made at Dunlop headquarters in Benicia, California.

The recognizable turtle logo and colorful palette have become shorthand for guitar pick thickness. Asking for green or yellow picks in a music shop will often lead to Tortex 0.88 mm or 0.73 mm picks.
