Product description
Introduced in 1981 as a high-quality substitute for tortoiseshell, Tortex developed its own identity and became a standard for comparison with other picks. Building on the precision, consistency and color-coded thickness system of his nylon picks, Jim Dunlop sought a brighter attack, better shape memory, greater durability and improved grip.
Dunlop selected Delrin as the base material and spent more than a year developing a special treatment to realize its potential. That treatment produces Tortex's distinctive matte gripping surface and aggressive attack, while the expanded color system created a bright palette that became an industry standard.
Production continues at Dunlop's Benicia, California headquarters using the original formula. The recognizable turtle logo and vivid colors made Tortex a reference point for players: green and yellow commonly identify the .88mm and .73mm picks in music stores. Musicians across genres and playing styles use these American-made picks to make their music.
