Key features
Product description
Before their recording career took off, the Seattle group played on street corners, combining acoustic guitar, foot-stomping rhythms and vocal harmonies to draw passersby. Their 2011 debut for local label Sub Pop captured that spontaneous energy and carried them from open-mic nights to sold-out headline performances at prominent venues. Ideas for a second album gradually grew out of world travel and playing to increasingly large audiences.
Let's Be Still captures a group that had not existed four years earlier. Virginia-born Jonathan Russell and California transplant Josiah Johnson formed its songwriting core, joined by drummer Tyler Williams, keyboard player Kenny Hensley, singer and violinist Charity Rose Thielen, and bassist Chris Zasche. Zasche met Russell and Johnson while working behind the bar at an open mic they attended. The new band committed itself to writing, recording and performing, and its members even shared a house.
Following the debut's success and extensive touring, the musicians found themselves in a different position. Russell described the confidence that came with a devoted audience and the growing ability to trust themselves, unlike their busking days when they filled every moment to keep people listening. Johnson wanted larger-feeling songs with less frantic energy and a recording that reflected the band's current live sound.
Russell also reflected on becoming a full-time musician: it fulfilled long-held ambitions while bringing a sense of loss for things left behind, experiences he saw as material for his writing. The album was recorded with help from previous production collaborator Shawn Simmons at Studio Litho in Seattle, then mixed with Peter Katis in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Katis is known for work with the National, Interpol and the Swell Season.

Let's Be Still retrata a un grupo que no existía cuatro años antes.
